ECMWF is seeking a Research Software Engineer to work on an exciting project to harmonize how numerical weather prediction (NWP) and climate data are described, stored, and used. The role involves developing a framework to facilitate access to and understanding of NWP and climate data, enabling users to share tools and workflows more easily. The position is part of the Foundational Software Services Team in the Development Section, focusing on the development of EarthKit and other software packages for data processing, workflow management, and visualization.

Full-time, fixed-term contract

Bonn, Germany

Grade A2 EUR 86,824 NET annual basic salary + other benefits

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop a framework to harmonize access to and understanding of NWP and climate data
  • Contribute to the development of EarthKit software stack
  • Integrate the harmonization framework into various tools and systems
  • Work on software packages for data processing, workflow management, and visualization
  • Collaborate with scientists and software engineers on key ECMWF activities
Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
  • Strong programming skills, particularly in languages used for scientific computing
  • Experience with weather or climate data processing
  • Knowledge of data formats and standards used in meteorology and climatology
